|Bay Bridge Demolition - November 7th|
Demolition is finally scheduled for the largest piece of the old Bay Bridge on November 7th! The piece is set to be demolished by implosion, a technique chosen as the least impactful to the surrounding environment. It’s also less expensive than original demolition plans of dismantling and removal. The decision wasn’t simple or easy, Caltrans worked with various marine and wildlife groups for months figuring out the best way to remove the now defunct bridge. Quite frankly, I'm amazed they were able to get any of these groups to agree.|
600 micro-charges will be detonated around an enormous chunk of sand buried concrete. The idea is the debris will be buried in it’s own cavities - while a “bubble curtain” of compressed air contains the blast. Efforts are in place to ensure local marine life doesn’t wander into the blast zone at the wrong time. And commuters on the new bridge will hopefully have their travels only minimally disrupted - 15 minutes of closure is expected in both directions.
After this scheduled demolition the removal of the old eastern span isn’t quite complete, but the remaining piers are of much smaller size and may also be demolished by implosion if November 7th goes well!
