Peter, Paul and Mary...

Found this post on CourageCampaign.org...  THANK YOU, PETER and PAUL!

Thank Peter, Paul & Mary for their support of marriage equality!

Read their cease-and-desist letter telling NOM to stop playing "This Land Is Your Land"

During their recent “Summer for Marriage” tour the National Organization for Marriage played a Peter, Paul & Mary recording of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” during their rallies, without the permission of the artists.

Kathleen Perrin, a participant on the Courage Campaign's Prop8TrialTracker.com, contacted Peter Yarrow and told him. Yarrow called the use of the song by NOM “heartbreaking” and said that he would be contacting NOM asking them to stop.

Beautifully written.  Yes, thank you to Peter & Paul!  Think NOM will listen?

Hi David -- I'd love to know--did PP&M receive a reply? Has the use stopped? Thanks for mentioning this.

Reminds me a little of Heart filing suit against McCain/Palin in 2008 for using 'Baracuda' Not sure if they had to pay any damages but if I recall correctly, they did have to stop playing it.

Kristen and Lottie - I heard that NOM used this song again on August 15th during a final rally in Washington DC.  If it continues, it would be interesting to see if PP&M will actually pursue legal action?  I hope they don't have to.

Richard - My pleasure.  :-)

Julia - I forgot about that!  At least they stopped playing it.

Sally - Great to see you here!  I agree...nice to see letters like that.

David,

I hadn't heard this before. Thanks for posting. Great that Peter & Paul sent the letter. I'm sure Mary would have signed as well, had she been alive. Peter, Paul and Mary have always been advocates for progressive causes.

I also wonder how many other artists would strenuously object to their music being used by the radical right. I sometimes tune to conservative talk radio, just to get my blood pressure skyrocketing, and have heard them use music by Jackson Browne and others who I know don't share their narrow vision of the world.

Jake, i'm willing to bet that the radical right's music choices would be severly limited if all the artists were able to tag when and where their music was being played.  ;-)
